POSITION: Befriender/Mentor

LOCATION:
Shakespeare Road (Worthing) and Daubeney House (Bognor Regis)

HOURS: As agreed/variable

RESPONSIBLE TO: Service Manager

ROLE OUTLINE:
To work alongside a key worker providing individual support to people with mental health problems.

MAIN TASKS:
  • To offer 1 to 1 support to individuals, providing a listening ear and adopting a solution focused approach.
  • To encourage and support clients to access community based resources and work with a proactive, recovery focused approach.
  • To liaise closely with the client’s designated key worker, and communicate outcomes, concerns, and information quickly and concisely.
  • Work to an agreed timetable with clients.
  • To support clients to access their local community i.e. visits to the shops, coffee bars and walks etc.
  • To assist in promoting the service to other organisations.
  • To be involved in keeping appropriate records.
  • To participate in supervision, appraisals, team meetings and training as appropriate and in accordance with Sussex Oakleaf’s policies.
  • To be aware and work within the policies and procedures of Sussex Oakleaf Housing Association.
  • Any other tasks commensurate with the post.
PERSON SPECIFICATION QUALITIES:

Experience:

 

Experience of using/working in mental health services

Knowledge and understanding:

To have an understanding of the needs of people with mental health problems
T
o have an understanding of social exclusion

Skills and abilities:
Good listening skills and able to support people when they are in distress, knowing when to refer people on to other staff
Ability to relate to people well on a one to one basis
Ability to support people in achieving their goals
Ability to speak a second language
Good verbal communication skills
Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
