Young Persons’ Group Facilitator - East Grinstead

Position: Volunteer Young Persons’ Group Facilitator

Location: East Grinstead

Hours: 1.5 hours per week

Role Outline

To facilitate the effective and efficient running of the Young Persons Group, so as to ensure a safe and supportive social environment. To encourage the members of the Group to participate by contributing their views and ideas for future activities.

Main Tasks

  • To lead the meeting of the group at a community based café. Coordinate the meeting point and the running of the group and update group members of any changes to time or venue.
  • To encourage and support clients to access community based resources and signpost people as appropriate.
  • To welcome new clients and encourage existing clients to do the same. Encourage inclusion and participation for all those attending.
  • To support more vulnerable new clients in making the most of attending the service.
  • To facilitate a group of clients meeting in the community.
  • To assist in the provision of a service which offers clients support and social contact in a safe and comfortable environment, addressing issues of social isolation.
  • To assist in promoting the service to other organisations.
  • To be involved in keeping appropriate records.
  • To participate in supervision, appraisals, team meetings and training as appropriate and in accordance with Sussex Oakleaf’s policies.
  • To be aware of, and work within, Sussex Oakleaf’s policies and procedures.

Person Specification Qualities

  • Experience of using / working in mental health services
  • To have an understanding of the needs of people with mental health problems
  • To have an understanding of social exclusion
  • To have completed, or be willing to complete, an OCN in Peer Support course
  • Good listening skills and to be able to support people when they are in distress
  • The ability to support people to achieve their goals
  • The ability to signpost people to other services, where appropriate
  • Good verbal communication skills
  • The ability to respond to client needs
  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • The ability to work on their own initiative
