Volunteer Role Description
POSITION:
Volunteer Group Facilitator
LOCATION:
Various sites across East Sussex
HOURS:
2-8 hours per week
RESPONSIBLE TO:
Recovery Worker Deputy Manager
ROLE OUTLINE:
To facilitate and/or co-facilitate groups for adults with mental health issues at East Sussex Day Services at various agreed locations including the Resource Hubs and at outreach.
MAIN TASKS:
- To offer individuals the opportunity to develop their skills in a recovery focussed group setting
- To signpost clients to other appropriate services as needed
- To communicate and engage with members of the group and to help them to participate more confidently in the activities offered
- To assist with planning and organising activities for the group. To encourage and discuss suggestions for activities and to support clients in putting their ideas into practice
- To encourage and support clients to access other community based resources as appropriate
- To welcome new group members and encourage existing members to do the same
- To assist in promoting and marketing the service to other organisations
- To tailor support to enable more vulnerable group members to make the most of attending the group
- To be involved in keeping appropriate records
- To participate in regular supervision, appraisals, team meetings and training as appropriate and in accordance with Sussex Oakleaf’s policies. To be aware and work within the policies and procedures of Sussex Oakleaf Housing Association.

PERSON SPECIFICATION QUALITIES:
Experience:
Experience of using mental health services
Knowledge and understanding:
To have an understanding of the needs of people with mental health problems
To have an understanding of social exclusion
To have a good understanding of Health & Safety and COSHH in a practical work environment
Skills and abilities:
Ability to supervise, teach and facilitate groups
Good listening skills and able to support people when they are in distress, knowing when to refer people on to other staff/agencies
Ability to remain calm with people in a practical work environment
Ability to support people in achieving their goals
Ability to signpost people to other services where appropriate
Good verbal communication skills
Ability to respond to client’s needs
Personal attributes:
Ability to work as part of a team
Ability to work on own initiative
